I did this craft with my daughters last Father’s Day. The kids thought it was neat, and it made a great memento for my husband. It would be a great gift for grandparents, too, or could be easily adapted to make ornaments for the holidays.

Materials & Equipment

  • Shrinky Dinks Crystal Clear sheets (available from Michael’s or Amazon)
  • Acrylic paints
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch
  • Permanent marker
  • Baking pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Oven (or toaster oven)
  • Spatula
  • Split-ring key rings
  • Mod podge

Instructions

1. Paint child’s hand with a thin coat of acrylic paint (no big globs of paint; they will clump when shrunk).

2. Press hand to shrinky dinks page, then leave hand print to dry.

3. Cut out handprint leaving a large bulge above the space between the middle and ring fingers to punch hole.

4. Punch hole and use permanent marker to write child’s name and the date of the back.

5. Place on parchment paper on cookie sheet and bake in the oven (or toaster oven) at 325°F for 1-3 minutes (when it stops changing shape wait 30 seconds, then remove). Use a spatula to flatten immediately after removing, if needed.

6. Thread key rings through holes of mini hand prints.

7. Coat hand prints thinly with Mod Podge, let dry 20 minutes, then add a second coat.

8. Finish assembling key chain to make a special gift!
